Mongu accidents claim four lives

Four people have died in two separate road traffic accidents in Sesheke District of Western Province while two sustained serious injuries.

The first accident, involved a Toyota Surf, registration number AJB 8928.

It happened last night, April 21, 2014, at 20:00 hours along Senanga Sesheke road when the driver, who has been identified as Simonga Maleye, aged 31, of Mtendere Compound of Lusaka, hit into a rear of the Ford motion tractor laden with timber.

And Western Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lackson Sakala, has confirmed the accident to ZANIS in an interview, saying the driver lost control and hit into the tractor which was going in the same direction at the curve of the road due to excessive speed.

Mr Sakala has identified the deceased as Derrick Mayando, Stephen, Mary Maliki and Wibesa Wibesa.

The second accident onvolved a pedestrian, Wibesa Wibesa, aged 36 of Makusi village in chief Imbwae’s area of Sesheke District,   who was bashed in a hit-and-run   on April 19, 2014 along Senanga Sesheke road and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, Ernest Haakanitu, aged 38, one of the passengers who was also involved in Toyota Surf accident, sustained a left arm fracture while the tractor driver, identified as Kangumu Kantobela, of Sesheke District, aged 21, sustained injuries on his body.

Mr Sakala said Maleye, the driver of the Toyota Surf, is also admitted to Yeta District Hospital in Sesheke with the rest of the injured.

And Roads Superintendent Traffic Officer, Justin Mulele, said Police have opened a docket against the driver for alleged causing death by dangerous driving.

However, the four bodies of the deceased are lying in Yeta District Hospital awaiting post-mortem and burial.
