In one of the accidents in Lusaka, two people died along the Kafue road while four others sustained injuries after the Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the Zambia Police Service they were travelling on hit into a stationary truck that was parked on the side of the road near Kafue’s River Motel.
Police public relations officer Charity Chanda said the incidents happened in the early hours of yesterday along the Kafue Road and Ndola-Kitwe dual carriage way.
In a statement yesterday, police public relations officer Charity Chanda identified the deceased as Benard Simbaya and Edwin Munene while the injured are Esna Mulpa, Thobia Mooya, Thomas Nyerenda and Winfred Tumbola, all of Siavonga.
She said the accident happened when the driver of the Land Cruiser, who has been identified as Kelvin Mukubi, tried to avoid a head-on collision with a vehicle which was overtaking another at a curve and in the process lost control of the vehicle.
Ms Chanda said the Land Cruiser was carrying relatives of Allian Chimbola, 44, who is alleged to have been shot dead by a police officer of Kariba in Siavonga on April 16.
She said Mr Chimbola’s relatives were on their way to Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital to attend a post-mortem of the deceased scheduled for yesterday.
