First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda has justified his declaration of Zambia as a one party State in 1972, saying the move was meant to stop the apartheid regime in South Africa from using his political opponents in the country to undermine his leadership.

Speaking on the BBC’s Hard Talk, Dr Kaunda says the apartheid regime in South Africa was determined to destroy Zambia and politically isolate him from other political leaders in Zambia.

Dr Kaunda says the declaration of Zambia as a one party State was not aimed at destroying multipartism in the country, but to stop the South African regime at that time from destroying the country.

He says it is for this reason that he went ahead to talk other political leaders in the country including African National Congress leader Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula to discourage them against falling for the idea of the South African apartheid regime to destroy the country.

Dr Kaunda says he managed to convince Mr Nkumbula to form a government of national unity under a one party State.

And Dr Kaunda says Zambia is growing and developing at a faster rate because of China’s investments.

He cites the construction of schools, hospitals and roads as some of the projects being undertaken with China’s assistance.

Dr Kaunda laughed at the assertion that China is practicing a kind of neo-colonialism by taking Africa’s natural resources and in return sale cheap manufactured goods to Africa.

  1. Kaunda you are such a foolish man who used to call us stupid idiots when you were president. You are the biggest idiot. Are you God to know that every opposition party was being used by the SA regime? What about Botswana? How did they survive with multi-party politics all along? You are a liar and a hypocrite.
