A MAN in Kasama in Northern Province is facing a murder charge following the death of his wife who he allegedly assaulted for failure to account for K5.
Police arrested the 41-year-old man after information surfaced linking him to the death of his wife who he beat up for failing to give him K5 change from a shopping errand.
The deceased woman, identified as Catherine Mumba, 32, died at Kasama General Hospital after she collapsed following the alleged assault by her husband.
Northern Province police chief Charity Katanga named the suspect as Kennedy Mubanga of Namulundu Village in Chief Mwamba’s area.
Ms Katanga said the incident happened on February 16, 2014, when Mubanga gave his wife money to get some food for home from a market.
Mubanga, however, got annoyed with Ms Mumba after she failed to produce the K5 he was expecting as change and allegedly beat her up.
“The deceased did not report the matter to the police. However, on 11th March, 2014, the deceased suddenly collapsed at home and was rushed to Kasama General Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead,” Ms Katanga said.
She said it was only after Ms Mumba’s death that the matter was reported to the police who arrested Mubanga yesterday.
“The body of the deceased is expected to be exhumed to ascertain the cause of death because when she died, the body was just buried without undertaking a post-mortem,” Ms Katanga said.
Mubanga is expected to appear in court soon.
