The Non-Governmental Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has observed that the media was an important tool for advancing gender equality in the country.

NGOCC board chairperson Beatrice Grillo said the media was also an important vehicle that should be used to change the mindset of women.

Ms. Grillo has since implored the media not to only cover stories concerning violence against women but also to bring out the many successes women have scored in their lives.

She was speaking in Lusaka last evening at the launch of the first ever NGOCC sensitive media awards.

Ms. Grillo noted that the media has not been highlighting stories of women battling the oppression of culture and tradition.

She has therefore urged the media to take interest in the successes which women were making at various levels of society.

Ms. Grillo hoped that the launch of the media awards would encourage journalists to report positively about the plight of women in the country.

The first draws of the NGOCC media competition will be held in December this year.
