INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

Good Morning Dear Friends,

Today, I wish to share with you some of our Government’s initiatives to promote the growth of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises [MSMEs] in order to create jobs. Let me assure our small businesses, that our Government is implementing various strategies to ensure MSMEs progressively migrate from small scale entrepreneurs to medium and large scale enterprises. These include among others:

1. Fully operationalise preferential procurement as provided for under the citizens’ economic empowerment Act;
2. Link MSMEs to the export market;
3. Simplifying the listing requirements for MSMEs on the Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE);
4. Promote the establishment of private sector managed venture capital funds to support MSMEs; and
5. Promoting joint ventures and franchising business models.

As you may be aware, our Government attaches great importance to employment creation as the top most strategy for ensuring the stability of society and overall growth of the economy in all sectors.

In this vein between October 2011 and February 2014, a total of 356,966 jobs have been created in the economy as follows: tourism 218,344; service 65,829; electricity, gas and water 28,618; construction 15, 091; education 10,099; finance 10,991; communal and social sector 4,998; agriculture, forestry and fishing 3,153; health 3,030; transport and communication 2,725 and others 3,088.

You may also wish to know that on 27th January 2014, the RDA began the distribution of the Pave Zambia equipment across the country. To date equipment has been distributed to (8) provinces in readiness for project implementation once operational funds are released from the Ministry of Finance. Distribution to the remaining (2) provinces of Muchinga and North Western will be effected by 13th March 2014.

Furthermore, our Government commenced the implementation of the National Road Tolling program on 1st November 2013 at Ports of entry and weighbridges. As at 28th February 2014, our Government through the RDA had collected a total of K82,579,950. MCS – 04/03/14
