Shamenda tells unions not to be confrontational

Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda has advised trade unions in the country to engage government in constructive dialogue as opposed to being confrontational.

Speaking when he officially opened the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) General Council in Lusaka today, Mr Shamenda says the name calling approach whenever there are some grievances needed to be addressed.

Mr. Shamenda says if there are some disagreement in the dialogue between government and t he unions, there should also be an agreement to disagree in a respectable manner.

He says this is because governments by nature world over do not accept to be dictated to especially through the media.

Speaking earlier, ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba bemoaned the slow pace at which the country’s labour laws are being revised.

Mr. Hikaumba says in the more than two years the Patriotic Front (PF) government has been in power it was expected that by now the country’s labour laws would have been revised.

And Mr. Hikaumba has also reiterated his union’s position that the current constitution making process comes to its conclusion.

He also stated that his union will also continue pleading with government for the reinstatement of the dismissed nurses.

And International Labor Organization (ILO) country Director Martin Clemensson also emphasized the need for the country to strengthen social dialogue among social partners.
