Siavonga Farmers urged to diversify

Siavonga , February 14th, 2014, ZANIS — Siavonga area Member of Parliament Kennedy Hamudulu has urged farmers in the area to diversify their agricultural ventures.

Mr.  Hamudulu says  in view of the diverse economic climate it was advisable for the farming community in the area to diversify instead of depending on maize cultivation only.

He said it was for this reason that there was need for a deliberate government policy to encourage diversification in the agricultural sector.

He stated that diversifying farming activities would help people in the area to be self-reliant.

Mr. Hamudulu said this  in a telephone interview with ZANIS  in Siavonga District, today.

The parliamentarian said  that he is encouraging crop diversification to the farmers in the constituency because it has a lot of benefits such crop price control among others.

The MP observed that funding is concentrated much on maize production, ignoring other equally important agricultural needs such as livestock farming and extension services.

He said considering the poor rainfall pattern in the constituency, farmers should diversify to growing other crops that can adapt to the change of weather such as cassava.

Mr. Hamudulu stated that all agricultural camps in the district should have officers, so that farmers in rural areas can get knowledge about new farming technologies that can assist in raising production.

He hoped that crop diversification will reduce the high poverty level that his constituency is currently faced with.
