Catherin Phiri fight in financial boost

–The forthcoming World Boxing Council (WBC) fight involving Zambia’s Catherine Phiri and German Pia Mazelanik has received a K250,000 boost from Zamtel.

Speaking during the handover of a cheque to Oriental Boxing Promotions Director, Christopher Malunga, Zamtel Communications Manager, Kennedy Mambwe, said his company is please with the rebirth of the sport of boxing in the country.

Mambwe said Zamtel is also happy with the strides Oriental Boxing promotions is making in identifying the boxing talent and exposing young boxers to international arena.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to support all activities aimed at grooming young sportsmen men and women in the country.

And Oriental Boxing Promotions Director, Christopher Malunga, thanked Zamtel for the support, saying it will greatly assist in various logistical arrangements towards the forthcoming fights.

Malunga also disclosed that the boxing stable will soon roll out a boxing talent identification programme in all the ten provinces of Zambia.

Zambia will for the first time in history host the two WBC senior title fights involving Catherine Phiri who will be taking on Pia Mazelanik of Germany for the vacant WBC silver bantamweight title fight scheduled for March 15, 2014, in Lusaka.

Zimbabwean-born boxer and African Boxing Union ABU Champion Charles, Manyuchi, will be fighting WBC Silver International Champion, Patrick Allotey of Ghana for the vacant WBC International Welterweight title.
