Zambezi DC hails DMMU

—Zambezi District Commissioner, Catherine Mukuma, has hailed the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for scoring a success in 2013 in supporting vulnerable families both in the East and West banks.

 

Ms Mukuma disclosed that the district received bags of mealie-meal, cooking oil and Kapenta from the province to help families that were affected by hunger.

 

She also revealed that 100 metric tonnes of maize were distributed in the West bank where people were surviving on mangoes and wild fruits.

 

She was speaking when Deputy Minister in office of the Vice President, Davies Mwango, called on her recently.

 

And speaking at the same occasion, Deputy Minister in Office of the Vice President, Davies Mwango, explained that the mandate of his office is to respond to disasters.

 

Mr Mwango said DMMU would at all time offer support to the vulnerable and the needy if they have a disaster.

 

He has noted that Zambezi West is prone to disaster because of the floods that occur in the area every year.

 

Mr Mwango said that DMMU has been mitigating disasters all the time but that the department is looking for a lasting solution to all flood prone areas.

 

The Deputy Minister was in the district to asses flood prone areas and resettlement schemes in the district.
