THE Small Livestock Association of Zambia (SLAZ) has urged Lusaka City Council (LCC) to consider revising the ban on the rearing of chickens in residential areas as this will affect the poultry industry in the country.
Recently, LCC announced the ban on the rearing of chickens in residential areas as this is has turned out to be a nuisance or danger to health to the community due to the offensive odours and flies emanating from the untidy poultry yards.
SLAZ chairperson Martin Mukuka said poultry farmers rearing chickens in backyards will also be affected as most of them depend on the business to sustain their livelihoods.
Mr Mukuka said LCC should have sensitised the farmers and informed them on the correct procedures before the ban was effective
“As SLAZ, we urge the relevant authorities [LCC] to sensitise poultry farmers on how best they can rear chickens, because LCC should not have imposed a ban before informing the people or the poultry farmers why it is not good to rear chickens in residential areas and also see on how best they can help them as some are small scale farmers who earn a living through poultry,” he said.
Mr Mukuka said this in a statement availed to the Daily Mail in Lusaka recently.
He said retired people who opt to rear chickens in residential areas will be the most affected.
Meanwhile, the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) says the decision by the LCC to ban the rearing of chickens in residential areas will affect people who depend on the business to sustain their livelihoods.
Speaking in an interview, ZNFU media liaison Kakoma Kaleyi said, “The ban on the rearing of chickens in residential areas by LCC will affect people who rely on the business to look after their families as most of them have retired and are not in employment.”
