–Local Government and Housing Minister Emerine Kabanshi has said her ministry will embark on a cleaning exercise by clearing garbage from townships to prepare Zambia ahead of the 50 years independence anniversary celebrations.

Ms. Kabanshi disclosed that cleaning exercise will commence in Chawama Township on January 31st, 2014 followed by the central business district and then Matero townships.

The minister told ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday that the townships and residential areas should look clean including the rest of the places in the country as the country celebrates the golden jubilee.

She has since challenged corporate companies to join hands with government in getting rid of garbage in the country.

Ms. Kabanshi has meanwhile warned scavengers against re-collecting garbage from dump sites because they risked being prosecuted for posing a health hazard to communities.

The golden jubilee would be celebrated under the theme “commemorating God’s favour of Zambia’s 50 years of independence for continued peace, unity, democracy and prosperity.”

Government has called on citizens to join in celebrating the country’s attainment of 50 years of independence in October this year.
