PRESIDENT Sata is expected here today to attend the 22nd African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government summit where a busy schedule awaits him.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Susan Sikaneta told journalists here yesterday that President Sata is expected to land at Bole International Airport at 14:00 hours local time to attend the summit being held under the theme ‘Agriculture and Food Security’.
“The programme is tight for the 30th and 31st of January.  The programme is loaded and there are a lot of decisions Heads of Government will make concerning agenda 2063,” Ms Sikaneta said.
Agenda 2063 envisages a prosperous Africa and the possibility of the formation of a Confederation of African States.
Ms Sikaneta also said President Sata is expected to attend a New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) mini-summit on the sidelines of the AU summit and hold bilateral meetings with organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
President Sata is scheduled to return to Zambia on Saturday.
The 22nd Ordinary Session of the AU is viewed as a special summit because this is the golden jubilee of the formation of the Organisation of African Union (OAU).
“This is a very eventful year and a special summit in the sense that we are continuing with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Union and the African Union. The celebrations are continuing this year because it is a golden jubilee with the same theme of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance,” Ms Sikaneta said
She said the programme began with the meeting of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) which considered the agenda for the executive council of Foreign ministers and the agenda for Heads of State and Government.
“We also did our own report of the permanent representatives committee on agenda items which will be discussed by our Foreign ministers. There was also a special retreat for Foreign ministers to discuss agenda 2063,” Ms Sikaneta said.
“Agenda 2063 is an inspiration of Africa looking at the last 50 years from 1963 to 2013 , those 50 years were really about the liberation of Africa and the political independence of Africa which was attained. Now, agenda 2063 is looking at the next 50 years up to 2063,” she said.
“A lot of good ideas have come out. What is envisaged is that by 2063, we should have a Confederation of African States,” Ms Sikaneta said.
