IN A RATHER bizarre event, an 81-year-old woman of Kabwe was on Wednesday raped by an unknown man while working in her maize field.

The victim’s son, Fabian Kasonkomona told the Sunday Mail yesterday in Kabwe that his mother was allegedly raped by a man estimated to be in his late 20s or early 30s on Wednesday between 12:00 hours and 14:00 hours in Kalulu area.
Efforts to contact Central Province police commissioner Standwell Lungu on the matter failed by press time as he was reported to be attending a meeting.
Mr Kasonkomona said his mother, who stays in Makululu Township, is traumatised by the ordeal she experienced and he has since taken her to his home to help her recover.
He said according to his mother, while she was weeding her maize field, a man armed with a knife approached her and threatened to kill her if she did not give him money.
He said it was then that she produced K2, which she gave him but after collecting the money, he instead dragged her into the bush where he allegedly raped her before fleeing.
“She was weeding her field and then someone came asking for a piece of work and she told him that there was no work. Thereafter, he demanded to be given money, threatening to kill her and she produced a K2, which she gave him,” he narrated.
He said when he was informed by some family members that his mother had been raped, he went to her home in Makululu Township and took her to Kasanda Police Station, where the matter was reported.
She was later taken to Kabwe Mine Hospital where she was counselled and treated.
He, however, is disappointed with the police, claiming that they do not seem to be eager to investigate the incident.
He said the police have not visited the crime scene or taken a statement from his mother.
“We are disappointed as a family with the police because they do not seem keen on this matter. The police should have acted quickly because rape is a serious crime just like murder and the person involved is 81 years.
“She is really traumatised by what she went through. It’s sad that someone can think of doing this to a harmless old woman and police should pursue the culprit,” he said.
He, however, is thankful to counsellors at Kabwe Mine Hospital for the counsel his mother was given when she was taken there for treatment.
And Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Central Province regional coordinator Juliet Kawanda said it is sad that someone can think of raping an old woman.
“It’s a sad development,” Ms Kawanda said. “Some people really have no regard for womanhood, raping someone who is 81?”
Ms Kawanda has since challenged the police not to rest until the culprit is brought to book.
