Mazabuka, January 20, 2014, ZANIS–Two Pharmacists from Mazabuka district hospital have been arrested and detained by police in Mazabuka in connection with the theft of essential drugs from the health institution that include Anti Retro – Viral (ARV) Drugs.

 Southern province police commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed the arrest of the two Pharmacists in an interview with ZANIS in Mazabuka this morning.

 Ms.Katanga identified the two medical practitioners as Chrispin Halwiindi aged 33 a resident of Chuundu compound in Mazabuka township and Christina Hachoombe 46, of Nanga Research area in Mazabuka.

 Ms Katanga disclosed that the two suspects were nabbed by police last week following a formal report that was made by a security guard at the hospital who intercepted the duo as they attempted to exit the hospital premises.

 According to Mrs Katanga, Sinjala Muhau , a security guard who was on duty at the hospital managed to apprehend the two pharmacists who had in their possession four by 500 grams of sealed tins containing different essential drugs allegedly stolen from the main hospital pharmacy.

 Mrs Katanga stated that the alert guard at the health institution apprehended the two health workers who had in their possession drugs namely nalidixic, amoxicillin, ethromycine and Metronidazole among others and dragged them to the police station.

 She however stated that the two suspects who have been charged with theft by public servant were released on police bond last Friday but will appear in court to answer the charges that have been levelled against them.

 “Mr. Sinjala Muhau of house number 232 Nakambala compound in Mazabuka , a security guard at the District Hospital apprehended and brought Chripin Halwiindi aged 33 years of house number 2 Chuundu compound a pharmacist at the same institution and Christina Hachoombe aged 46 years  of Nanga Research who were found with 4 by 500 grams sealed tins of different drugs within the hospital premises,”stated Mrs Katanga.

 And sources at the hospital revealed that the pilferage of drugs has been going on for some time now leading to the hospital experiencing shortages of essential drugs in the recent past.

 The sources disclosed that Management at the hospital went ahead and warned over the regular shortage of some drugs despite the consistence supply of drugs by the medical stores advising that those found pilfering drugs would be strongly dealt with.
