Poor drainage erodes Solwezi roads

Solwezi, January 16, 2013, ZANIS….Solwezi district commissioner Crispin Likando says the lack of a proper drainage system in the district is contributing to the wearing-out of roads.

Mr Likando said the heavy rains being experienced in the district is contributing to the fast erosion of the roads due to lack of proper drainage.

He said it is becoming difficult to control the flow of water due to poor planning of most townships in the district.

Mr Likando said it was a challenge to the council to find resources for stone or concrete drainages that would help control the eroding of roads.

He was speaking in Solwezi yesterday after he conducted an on the spot check of roads and bridges that have been eroded and washed away due to heavy rains being experienced in the district.

Mr Likando also took time to inspect gullies that have formed in Kazomba and Kyawama townships due to lack of drainages.

A resident of Kyawama compound Sanir Benson appealed to the district commissioner to urgently find ways of burying the life threatening gully that has formed just near his home.

Mr Likando said the team comprising council, DMMU, RDA and ZNS officers will start filling up the gullies on Monday next week to save the lives of the residents as well as quick fix the roads that have become impassable as a temporal measure.
