1500 calves vaccinated in Chipata

Chipata, January 14, 2014, ZANIS…..Over 1,500 calves in Chipata district  have been vaccinated against East Coast Fever.

Chipata District Agriculture Coordinator (DACO) Michael Ngulube told ZANIS in an interview today that 1,542 calves were vaccinated between December 20, 2013 and January 2014.

Mr. Ngulube said this is against the cattle population of 8000 in the district stating the programme will resume once more vaccines are sent to the area.

Mr. Ngulube noted that the vaccination programme which was funded by an international donor called Small Holder Livestock Programme only targeted 1,542 calves for the year 2013.

And Mr. Ngulube said government has managed to contain army worms that had invaded crop fields in some parts of Chipata district in the eastern province.

District Agriculture Coordinator (DACO), Michael Ngulube said the district has not recorded new cases of the army worms as all the fields that had been attacked have since been sprayed with insecticides.

Mr. Ngulube said all the fields in Chanje, Mnunukwa, Chiparamba, and Mnoro areas that were attacked by army worms were sprayed.

He noted that the worms had been contained even in Msipazi area where it was widespread.

Last month, some parts of Chipata district reported an outbreak of army worms which had attacked some maize fields in certain areas.
