Great Lakes Region inter-ministerial meetings begin in Angola

The regional inter-ministerial committee meetings of the fifth ordinary summit of the International Conference on the Great Lake Region (ICGLR) have opened in Luanda, Angola.

 

Ministers of Defence and Security, of Foreign Affairs and other delegates from the Great Lakes Region member states have gathered to look at among other things, the security of the countries in this region.

 

The Great Lakes Region member states are also considering the contributions of the member states’ to the ICGLR budget for 2014-2015.


The inter-ministerial committee meeting, which started sitting on Saturday, January 11, 2014, is expected to come up with recommendations which will be presented to the fifth summit of the ICGLR heads of state and government on Tuesday, 14th January 2014 in Angola.


According to the programme obtained by ZANIS at the summit secretariat in Luanda yesterday, the heads of state and government from all the member states of the Great Lakes Region are expected to arrive on Tuesday 14th January 2014 for the fifth ordinary summit of International
Conference on the Great Lakes Region.


On Wednesday 15th January 2014, the head of state and governments are expected to convene for the official opening of the summit in the Angolan capital city Luanda.

 

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officially hand over the chairmanship of the Great Lakes Region to President Jose Edouardo Dos Santos of Angola.


The two Presidents, who will be exchanging the chairmanship, are expected to give speeches together with the special representative of the African Union to the Great Lakes Region, special representative of the UN to the Great Lakes Region and the International Conference on
the Great Lakes Region Executive Secretary Ntumba Luaba.


The same meeting is expected to receive update on security situation in the ICGLR member states and be briefed by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on South Sudan negotiations and further adopt the 2014-2015 ICGLR budget.


Meanwhile, Defence Minister Edgar Lungu is already in Luanda leading the Zambian delegation attending the inter-ministerial committee meeting ahead of the fifth ordinary summit of the ICGLR heads of state and government.

 

Vice President Guy Scott is expected to attend the ICGLR summit on behalf of President Michael Sata.
