A MAN in Kitwe has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in police cells.

Alfred Chola, 42, who was arrested for theft and detained at Nakadoli Police Post in Chimwemwe Township, is believed to have hanged himself using his jacket and tying it to a window in the cells.

Acting Copperbelt Police Chief Joyce Kasosa confirmed the incident which happened on News Year’s eve around 18:00 hours.

Ms Kasosa said investigations had been launched and a postmortem would be conducted to establish the cause of Chola’s death.

But Mr Chola’s relatives suspect that he was beaten by police officers.

His brother, Abel Chikwa said the family did not believe that Mr Chola, who had been detained for a week, had committed suicide.

Mr Chikwa said when the family went to see him on Tuesday evening, they were informed that he had been taken to Mindolo Police Station but later the officers informed them that he had committed suicide.
