ZCID slams Nevers

THE Zambia Centre for Inter Party Dialogue (ZCID) says MMD president Nevers Mumba’s call for early elections is misguided.

ZCID member Langtone Sichone said in Lusaka yesterday that the Patriotic Front Government should be allowed to run its full term to implement its programmes.

Mr Sichone said it was not feasible for anyone to call for elections when the ruling party had only been in power for two years after unseating the MMD.

He said it was wrong for any opposition leader, for whatever reason, to press for early elections when they should be spending time marketing their party manifestos to the Zambian people.

He also described Dr Mumba’s conduct to reveal to the public a recent conversation he had with Republican President Michael Sata as an assault on inter-party dialogue.

Mr Sichone said the revelations, regardless of whether they were a true reflection of what was said or not, were against the spirit of confidentiality and unity in the country.

“The general public was not privy to what the two of them discussed so it was wrong for him to go to the public to disclose. It was wrong for him to do that.

“As leaders, let us be transparent and avoid discussing whatever we discuss in privacy to the general public .It is unfortunate that this happened,” Mr Sichone said.

He encouraged national leaders to dialogue and deal with national issues in a mature manner.

Mr Sichone said national harmony was important in providing a good ground for development.
On Saturday, Dr Mumba said at a Press conference that President Sata wanted him jailed at all costs.
He said three weeks ago he received a call from Mr Sata and he told him that he had heard that when he becomes president, he would put the Head of State in jail.

Dr Mumba said he had heard that the President wanted him jailed and he was ready for that.
But President Sata, who spoke through his Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chellah, said it was unfortunate for Dr Mumba to attack the Judiciary.

He said he was saddened by Dr Mumba’s twisting of the truth, adding that the MMD leader had exaggerated the telephone conversation they had.

He said Dr Mumba had told him that he had been trying to reach out and he even gave the MMD leader his private line.

Mr Sata said that he had wanted to promote the spirit of dialogue and he responded well by telling Dr Mumba that he was free to call him any time.

“It’s a pity that he has twisted the conversation which he started,” Mr Sata said.

He urged Dr Mumba not to drag him into his court case because he had nothing to do with it.

President Sata said when the festive season was about giving and reconciliation, Dr Mumba had decided to give Zambians a gift of lies and deceit.
