Prisons Care and Counseling Association (PRISCCA) has called on the government to improve medical care in prisons if the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is to be reduced.

PRISCCA Executive Director Godfrey Malembeka has told Qfm that poor conditions and minimal medical care for prisoners contribute to the transmission of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis among inmates.

Mr. Malembeka notes that congestion in prisons has also highly contributed to the increase in HIV/AIDS in prisons hence the urgent need to come up with ways of decongesting prisons.

He however states that as an association, they have intensified sensitization in prisons on the transmission, prevention and dangers of HIV/AIDS.

Mr. Malembeka has further called on the government to take prompt action to improve medical care in prisons.
