Presidents U-turn on issuance of nationwide licenses to Qfm and Phoenix worries MISA

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) has expressed concern over President Michael Sata’s remarks following the issuance of nationwide broadcasting licenses to private radio stations by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA).

President Sata stated yesterday that the issuance of nationwide licenses to Radio Phoenix and QFM borders on the country’s integrity.

MISA Zambia Chairperson Nalumino Nalumino says MISA will be deeply saddened if government goes ahead to revoke the licenses issued to QFM and radio Phoenix.

Mr. Nalumino says it is unfair and an acceptable for government to make such a u-turn when Zambians are eager to have information at their finger tips especially IN RURAL areas where people are only able to listen to the national broadcaster ZNBC.

Mr Nalumino says there is need for government to give the media freedom to operate without being interfered with.

Mr. Nalumino adds that it is unfortunate that the happiness for the two commercial radio stations has been short-lived.
