A LUSAKA couple has died after fire swept through their bedroom before spreading to other rooms in Ibex Hill area.

Steven Nyoni and his wife Marjory Chisala Nyoni, both aged 49, were burnt to ashes while their six children managed to escape from the burning house.

By the time the fire brigade managed to put out the flames, the house was reduced to rubble and the bodies of the couple charred beyond recognition.

Police deputy spokesperson Esther Katongo said in an interview that the fire was suspected to have started in the early hours of Wednesday and was extinguished around 06:00 hours.

“Yes I can confirm that we received a report of the death of a couple who died in the inferno in their bedroom.

“We have not yet ascertained the cause of the fire but we have launched serious investigations into the matter,” she said.

A check found relatives still cleaning the house where the couple died and wondered how both could not have shouted for help.

The family members said nothing was retrieved from the bedroom because by the time the fire fighters arrived, the fire had destroyed all the property.
