THE Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) has offered Zambia’s boxing star Catherine Phiri a title fight against reigning bantamweight champion Carolina Rodriguez.

The fight will take place mid-next year.

WIBA is the world’s most respected women boxing sanctioning body whose past champions include Laila Ali, daughter of legend Mohammed Ali, who was a super middleweight champion and retired undefeated with 34 fights.

WIBA president Ryan Wissow said he was impressed with the performance of Catherine, who last weekend won the African Boxing Union (ABU) bantamweight title after beating Toma Hawa-Babirye of Uganda.

Wissow said he was impressed with Catherine’s progression and believes she is now ready to take on the world champion.

He admitted that while the Catherine camp had set their eyes on the World Boxing Council (WBC) belt he was ready to give the exciting young Zambian boxer a chance to challenge for the WIBA title.

“I know Catherine’s team wants to fight for the WBC title. And thats good but the WIBA title is also up for grabs for her. She is a good boxer and she can have a go at it.

The WIBA bantamweight world champion is Carolina “Crespa” Rodriguez from Chile. Like Catherine Phiri, Carolina is undefeated, and she’s coming off a big win over another unbeaten contender,” Wissow said.

And crucially, the latest WIBA ranking released last week on Thursday for October, ranked Catherine as number 10.

Carolina is a 30-year-old boxer who has won all her nine professional fights and all of them on points with the last being one where she claimed the vacant WIBA bantamweight title when defeating Ana Lozano on august 31, this year, in Chile.

  1. Problem is that all Zambian Boxers CANNOT WIN a fight abroad (from Lottie Mwale days to date). Their wins are all at home.
