FORMER Zambia Squash Association (ZSA) president Phil Munsaka on Thursday carded an impressive 40 points to win the Investrust Bank Corporate Golf Championship in Ndola.
Munsaka’s almost flawless performance after 18 holes won him recognition from Ndola Golf Club, who opted to chop his handicap from 11 to nine.
Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital executive director, Sam Phiri was runner-up after finishing on 39 points, one adrift Munsaka. Dr Phiri, who has played in the C Division for almost a decade, finally graduated to the B Class after his handicap was reduced to 17 from 19.
Former Ndola Golf Club captain, Garry Rutherford was crowned the A Division champion after winning a three-way count back following a tie on 34 points.
Rutherford was trailed by Steve Mateyo and Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) president, Charles Mwanza, respectively in this tournament which attracted an overwhelming participation from several corporate executives and sports administrators, who included African Golf Confederation (AGC) president, Joe Malanji and Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) board member, Emmanuel Katebe.
In the B Division, Ndola captain, Humphrey Mutambo proved that he was not just an administrative leader but also a good player when he scooped the top prize.
Major Mutambo brought 37 points, beating the duo of veteran Godfrey Mbawala and Stanford Siachoono by a point.
Daniel Pederson was the C Division winner on 37 points, seven clear of runner-up, Paul Simfukwe, the immediate-past Zampost postmaster general. Simfukwe was two points better than third-placed Peter Tival while Mutinta Maimbo topped all in the ladies category after garnering 31 points.
Investrust Bank managing director, Friday Ndhlovu paid tribute to Ndola for accepting to stage the tournament despite being told at short notice.
Ndhlovu, a former Ndola vice-captain, said Investrust were hoping to turn the tournament into an annual event. He said Investrust made a strategic decision to come to Ndola and open two branches because of the tremendous business potential in the city.
Mutambo said Ndola felt honoured to host the Investrust tournament and requested that the bank should consider making it an annual fixture for the club.
