Govt considers engaging another oil supplier

THE Government is considering engaging an additional supplier of petroleum products for the country when Indeni Oil Refinery in Ndola shuts down its operations to pave way for routine maintenance works next month.
Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma said in an interview yesterday that Government could engage another petroleum importer, which alongside Trafigura Beheer BV of Netherlands, would help the country meet its fuel requirements when Indeni shuts down.
The minister said Government was keen on ensuring that the impact on fuel supply in the country was minimal when Indeni shuts down its operations for a 30-day routine maintenance.
“It has not yet been concluded as to whether or not there will be need to bring in this supplier when Indeni shuts down operations.
“But we are still putting up contingency measures to ensure that we accelerate the provision of fuel and all major hindrances to the efficient supply of fuel are dealt with before the plant shuts down,” he said.
Mr Yaluma said he would soon meet with officials from Indeni, TAZAMA and his ministry to discuss the progress made from stakeholder consultations convened on the matter so far.
