A 12-year-old grade seven pupil of Kitwe’s Justin Kabwe primary school has committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt.
Malama Mwansa of house number 87 New Ndeke, hanged himself last Wednesday on a pole supporting the clothes line outside his family house.
His father Chanda Mwansa confirmed the incident in an interview yesterday and expressed shock over the death of his son.
Mr Mwansa said on the fateful day, Malama was hanging out with his friends during the night when his mother asked him to take a bath but he refused saying he wanted to have a hot bath.
He said Malama remained outside until his older brother discovered his body hanging from a pole with a belt around the neck.
“I am really shocked by the death of my son. He was only asked to take a bath on that fateful day, only to find him hanging from a pole,” Mr Mwansa said.
He described his son as an intelligent boy who had passed his mock examinations with flying colours.
Mr Mwansa said Malama was not suicidal and it is shocking for a young boy like him to think of committing suicide when he did not have any problems.
Meanwhile, CHOMBA MUSIKA reports that an 18-year-old man of Ngwenya in Livingstone has died after being buried alive under a pile of sand.
Southern Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga confirmed that Gift Chisengele died last Wednesday when the sand he was digging fell on him.
Mrs Katanga said the incident happened around 14:00 hours near the weighbridge on Lusaka road.
“Henry Walubita, 34, of house number DSV 27, Dambwa Site and service reported the sudden death of Gift Chisengele, 18, of Ngwenya,” she said.
Mrs Katanga said police have opened an inquest into the death.
