The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has backed calls by some civil society organizations for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) leadership to apologize for involving traditional leaders in political campaigns in the just ended July 25th by-elections.

UPND Secretary General Winston Chibwe says the PF leadership should show remorse for breaching the Electoral law by engaging Paramount Chief Mpezeni in their by-election campaigns in Chipata central.

Mr. Chibwe has told Qfm in an interview that the PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba is also fully aware of how wrong it is to engage Chiefs in partisan politics as the issue was already discussed at a Consultative meeting for Secretary Generals from all political parties after the Feira by-election.

And Mr. Chibwe has advised chiefs from areas where the September 5th by-elections are due to take place to learn from the condemnation of traditional leaders that took part in campaigns for the ruling party in the just ended by-elections.

He notes that staying away from partisan politics during elections will also serve traditional leaders in the country from being ridiculed and put to shame when people decide to disobey their appeals to vote for a particular candidate in an election.

Mr. Chibwe says outcome in the Chipata Central by-election where the MMD emerged victorious is an indication that people can always decide on their own despite chiefs trying to influence them to vote for a particular candidate.
