FOUR Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers who allegedly killed two fishermen of Nsumbu village in Kaputa and dumped their bodies on Lake Tanganyika have been arrested.
Irate villagers burnt the houses of the ZAWA officers following the shooting of the two fishermen. The officers were arrested yesterday after being on the run for over a week.
Northern Province commissioner of police Mary Chikwanda confirmed yesterday that the incident happened between July 20 and July 22, 2013 around 22:30 hours in Nsumbu.
Ms Chikwanda identified the dead as Morris Kalungu, 22, and Chisha Mulundu, 20, who are believed to be step-brothers.
“ZAWA officers were patrolling the area near the Crocodile Farm in Nsumbu when they saw a light on the waters of Lake Tanganyika.
“When the officers drew nearer, they saw some people and shot at them, instantly killing two of them,” Ms Chikwanda said.
She said the suspects allegedly ran away after killing the two fishermen but police arrested them in Mpulungu yesterday.
Ms Chikwanda, however, withheld the names of the suspects for “fear of jeopardising investigations” because police are yet to conduct an identification parade.
“Four officers were allegedly involved in the shooting. They ran away after committing the crime but they were arrested yesterday by our officers in Mpulungu where they were hiding.
“They have been taken to Mporokoso where they will be formally charged and taken to court to answer charges,” Ms Chikwanda said.
