A 12 – year – old boy died on the spot while five other family members sustained body injuries after an overloaded ox-cart they were on overturned.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila disclosed the incident to ZANIS in Lundazi yesterday and identified the deceased as John Nyirenda of Siliya village in chief Zumwanda in Lundazi district.
Ms Chipalila said the accident happened when the father to the deceased and other family members went to harvest maize from their field.
The Police Commissioner said after harvesting the maize, they over loaded the ox-cart and some family members decided to sit on top of the maize.
On the way, they started beating the oxen to speedup movement and in the process, ox-cart hit a stump, forcing a wheel to come out and overturned, killing the young boy instantly.
Ms Chipalila said Nyirenda died on the spot while Zelu Nyirenda sustained a broken color bone and five other family members just sustained minor body injuries and were admitted at Lumezi mission hospital before being discharged.
During the revelation of this news by the Police Commissioner, Zelu Nyirenda was still admitted to hospital while the other family members were discharged after receiving treatment.
