Increased P.Is threaten security in Siavonga District

Siavonga, July 3rd, 2013, ZANIS —-  The ever increasing number of illegal immigrants in Siavonga District is a cause of security concern, says the area’s civic leader.

UPND Chirundu ward councilor  Nevers Muchindu says  the  number  of  illegal immigrants whose businesses were unknown at the small  border town was threatening the security in the area.

ZANIS reports that the Chirundu ward councilor  said this in an interview in Chirundu , today.

Mr. Muchindu  has  however blamed  the immigration department  which he accused of  seemingly reluctant to deal with the issue.

‘’ It’s sad that we are seeing strange people in the area whose whereabouts are not known and they are a threat to national security.

”  I wonder  how these people manage to enter our border because if we had to go round looking  for them , you find that most of them do not even have travelling documents.

“  Because of this ,  it is the same people bringing crime and multiplying the HIV infections in the area’’  , he said.

The civic leader however urged the people in the area to stop keeping the illegal immigrants in their homes.

He added that there was need for the community to be involved by reporting any suspicious looking residents to the relevant authorities in order to bring sanity the country.

The porous borders of Zambia has made it easy for foreign nationals to enter the country at free will with little or no prevention programmes.

However, the Immigration Department says it aims to effectively and efficiently facilitate and regulate the entry and exit of persons and control the stay of immigrants and visitors in the country.

The department says on its official website www. zambiaimmigration.gov.zm that  this is in order to contribute to internal security and sustainable socio-economic development.
