–Candidates from three political parties have successfully filed in their nomination papers for the Chikanda and Mwalala local government by-elections in Mkushi District.

Mkushi District Electoral Officer (DEO), Everty Ng’andu, confirmed to ZANIS that the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), and opposition Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) and United Party for National Development (UPND), would field candidates for the by-elections.

For Chikanda Ward, Mr Ng’andu named the candidates as Martin Musonda of PF, Boaz Nkandu of MMD, and Evaristo Himalikiti of UPND.

He said the candidates for Mwalala Ward are Benford Katiti of PF, and Megirus Mumpampa of MMD.

Mr Ng’andu, who is also Mkushi Council Secretary (CS), noted that there were no incidences that contravened the Electoral Code of Conduct during the nomination exercise as everything went smoothly.

He said that the by-elections had come about after two councillors resigned from the opposition MMD.

The nomination exercise for Chikanda Ward was held in Masansa, whilst the Mwalala Ward nominations took place in Chembe yesterday.

Before the resignation of the two councillors , Mkushi’s Council Chamber was dominated by the opposition MMD as it held 14 out of the total 17 local government Wards.
