The Lusenga Trust has disclosed that the population of lions has depleted in the Zambian game reserves.

This came to light today during the establishing of the Zambia Lion Aid Trust whose aim is protect Zambian lions which are threatened by safari hunting.

Lusenga trustee James Chungu said interventions should be initiated if the population of lions is to be increased.

Mr. Chungu implored the media to take interest in wildlife reporting so that the general public can be sensitized on the dangers of poaching.

He said the remaining lion population in the country is threatened with legal and illegal poaching.

He feared that the Zambian lions could be wiped out if measures to protect the beasts are not taken urgently.

Mr. Chungu noted that the absence of wildlife will result in the tourism sector dying a natural death

He observed that North and West Africa has no lions due to heavy poaching.

He has since called on the Zambian public to emulate Kenya that banned hunting in 1977 hence the wildlife of that country is flourishing.
