Water plant works in Nyimba reach advanced stage

Chipata, June 26, ZANIS……The construction works on the water emergency plant for Nyimba district has reached an advanced stage.

The plant being constructed by China Gansu at a cost of KR 6.5 million is aimed at cautioning the water crisis facing the district after water levels reduced in the Nyimba dam the only source of water supply for both humans and animals.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Nyimba District Commissioner George Phiri commended government for responding quickly to the water problem which had impacted negatively on the wellbeing of people and their livestock in the district.

Mr. Phiri noted that Nyimba has recorded massive growth in all key economic sectors and population also has been growing at a faster rate hence causing more demand for water which however, could only be supplied by one dam.

He noted that it was for this reason that government embarked on the construction of an improved water reticulation system through the construction of six industrial boreholes.

He said the six boreholes which have the capacity to pump 23 liters of water per minute will go a long way in addressing the water challenges currently been faced in the district.

And projects Manager Xi Yongjie disclosed that 80 percent of the works have been done so far and that the project is expected to be completed in three weeks time.

Mr. Xi said his company is just awaiting the final consignment of pipes from South Africa before the plant can be operational.
