Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has welcomed governments announcement of its intentions to table the Access To Information (ATI) Bill before Cabinet as part of its implementation plan.
MISA Zambia chairperson, Nalumino Nalumino, told ZANIS in a press statement in Lusaka today that for the past 11 years the process to enact the ATI Bill has been a back-and-forth process.
Mr Nalumino also noted that in 2012, government postponed several steps that would have resulted into the enactment of the bill.
He said MISA Zambia welcomes President Sata’s move to make the pronouncement, adding that this decision has been long awaited with abated breath for over 11 years.
Mr Nalumino stated that the Access to Information Bill has been on Zambians agenda since 2001 but that no meaningful movement has been recorded to bring the long walk to a logical conclusion.
Recently, Vice President Guy Scott, during the Public Service Day celebrations in Lusaka, announced government’s intentions to table the Access to Information bill in Cabinet.
The Access to Information Bill has for a long time been a hot issue in Zambia with media and civil society organizations pressing for the enactment of the bill as legislation.
