Ruling PF maintains popularity in Local govt, polls

 

Lusaka, June 22, 2013, ZANIS — The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) have won 9 out of the 11 local government seats in the 20th June 2013 Local Government by elections  held in selected constituencies.

 

 

The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) only managed to record victories in two wards in Eastern province, namely Kavumbo and Mbozi in Chadiza , respectively.

 

 

 

The  United Party for National Development (UPND), the United Independence Party (UNIP) and the National Restoration Party (NAREP) failed to secure a single seat in all the eleven wards that were up for grabs.

 

 

 

ZANIS reports that Electoral Commission of Zambia Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna disclosed this in a statement, in Lusaka  today.

 

 

Mr. Akufuna  said  the ruling PF scooped two local government seats in Eastern province namely Chisiya and Chimphanje in Chadiza, and  two other seats in Chibale and Masaninga in Serenje, central province.

 

 

 

In Chisiya Ward in Chadiza District, PF candidate Bonex Mshanga got 227 votes while Esau Nthwala of the MMD got 190 followed by UPND’s Masautso Sakala who got 18 and Stella Phiri of UNIP got 16 votes.

 

 

 And in Chimphanje ward, PF candidate Thomas Mwale amassed 199 votes while Jonathan Phiri of the MMD got 168 leaving UNIP candidate Mary Phiri with only 24 votes.  

 

 

In the copper belt the ruling party has won the Justine Kabwe ward in Luanshya district while in Luapula province, the PF has scoped Mushipashi ward in Mansa.

 

 

In Luanshya’s Justine Kabwe ward  candidate  Jack Musonda of the ruling PF beat 6 other candidates when he polled 310 votes.

 

 

PF’s Evaristo Kalyondo polled 615 in Mushipashi ward while George Musa of the MMD received 84 votes followed by NAREP’s Kostah Kasongo who got 33 while James Chipola got 21 votes.

 

 

The ruling PF also scooped the Phwazi and Kabowo wards in Luangwa district in Lusaka and Sekute ward in Kazungula in Southern province.

 

 

In Phwazi ward, PF candidate Felix Kazangalale pooled 329 against his nearest rival Michael Phiri of the UPND who polled 146 while Ntaiko Phiri of the United Independence Party and Paul Tembo of the National Restoration Party got  a paltry 5 and 4 votes respectively.

 

 

In Kabowo ward, Ana Kuyana of the PF received 109 while UPND’s Ignatius Phiri got 64 followed by NAREP’s Dominic Mackanzie who got 4 and UNIP candidate Regis Phiri got only 1 vote.

 

 

In Sekute Ward, PF candidate Kamwi Inambao got 346 to beat his only rival Kingsley Mutema of the UPND when who only managed to receive 310 votes.
