-About 16 street vendors trading near Luwingu Bus Station in Kasama narrowly escaped death when a Spacio motor vehicle plunged into a drainage and overturned in the early hours of yesterday.

A ZANIS news crew that rushed to the scene found the vehicle, registration number ADC 3400, being lifted and pushed to the roadside by some call-boys around 04:40 hours when the traders were preparing their tables for their day’s business.

The vehicle destroyed a good number of the tables placed about less than two meters from the road before it overturned and police traffic officers quickly arrived at the scene of accident.

And Kasama Town Clerk, Raphael Phiri, said his management has prepared a programme to sensitise the vendors so that they conduct their business in an orderly manner.

Mr Phiri said Kasama Municipal Council has plans to identify streets in the township where vendors can be trading from instead of risking their precious lives on the high way.

Meanwhile, Kasama District Commissioner, Kalanga Bwalya, said measures to control street vendors in the area seem to be difficult to handle and suggested that he would engage PF members at district level to help and dialogue with the vendors.
