 Ignoring the media is dangerous – Health expert

Mbala, June 19, 2013, ZANIS —  Mbala District Council Chief   Health Inspector Moses Mutyoka  says the media plays  a key role in enhancing good hygiene practices in the nation.

 

Mr. Mutyoka who is also Community Led Total Sanitation (CTLS) National Trainer says the tendency of ignoring the media is dangerous as it plays a key role in informing and educating the masses on various national issues.

 

He  has since appealed to the organizations that do not involve media to consider involving them.

 

ZANIS reports that the District Council Chief   Health Inspector was speaking during the CLTS awareness and advocacy workshop for Traditional leaders, None Governmental organizations (NGOs) and  Faith Based organizations and health experts in Isoka district.

 

Mr. Mutyoka said the Media is a strong tool to sensitize and change the mindset of a community.

 

He said the National Rural water and Sanitation with its partners is in a hurry to change the trend poor practices of hygiene.

 

Mr. Mutyoka said government wants to strike the MDG target 2015 of reaching 60 percent from the 13 percent of Zambia’s population of 13 million.

 

And on water supply, Mr. Mutyoka says 37 percent of Zambian people have adequate clean water supply which needs to be improved to 75 percent by 2015.

 

Meanwhile, Mr. Mutyoka has observed that the entire Isoka District Township has no sewerage system that ends up polluting the underground water as feacal matter deposited in soaker ways, ends up contaminating the water.

 

In addition, sub-chief Wandia has wondered why sanitation standards have fallen down in the rural areas currently.

 

Sub chief Wandia said in the colonial days, sanitation was enhanced well, compared to the current days. He said diseases such as cholera, Typhoid were not common.
