Government regrets shooting incident in Chongwe district

Chief Government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni has regretted the shooting incident that resulted in the death of two people and also left one person injured in the process in Chongwe district.

And Mr Sakeni has disclosed that government through the Ministry of Defence and in liaison with the Chongwe District Council (CDC) has facilitated the allocation of Fifty (50) hectares for the benefit of the squatters.

Meanwhile, Government has instituted investigations into the incidence and appealed to the people of Kampasa community to remain calm as government strives to establish the cause of the incident.

ZANIS reports that Mr Sakeni who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said government regrets the loss of lives and sends sympathies to the bereaved families.

The incident occurred at the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Airport Farms where some unscrupulous people are alleged to have encroached in the land and have started selling some parts.

Mr Sakeni said this in a press statement made availed to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today.

“The Nation may wish to know that the problem at ZNS Airport Farms has been a long standing issue since the year 2010. Some of the Kampasa community settled on ZNS land had further encroached and resisted vacation,” Mr Sakeni explained.

“It is regrettable that this incident happened in that manner when government, through the Ministry of Defence has facilitated the allocation of Fifty (50) hectares from ZNS land in liaison with the Chongwe District Council (CDC) for the benefit of the squatters”, he added.

He further explained that some unscrupulous and selfish individuals have further encroached, taken advantage and started selling some of the land.

Mr Sakeni pointed out that government has since instituted investigations into the incident and appealed to the people of the Kampasa community to remain calm.

“ Government wishes to confirm that, on 14th June,2013, there was a shooting incident that occurred at Zambia National Services (ZNS) Airport Farms where two (2) lives were lost and one (1) injured,” he added.
