ZCTU commends government

Solwezi, June 13, ZANIS ——–The Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) in North-Western province has commended government on its stance to reject the proposed extension by six months towards the constitution making process.

ZCTU Provincial Coordinator Kameya Manjomba said ZCTU in the province fully supports the decision and reasons advanced by government not to allow the proposed extension by the technical committee drafting the Zambia constitution to save the escalating costs.

Mr Manjomba said this in a statement made available to Zambia News and Information Services in Solwezi today.

He said the constitution making process has gobbled a lot of money that can be used to finance other programs of equal importance, adding that the application of an extension should not be entertained by the government.

Mr Manjomba stated that the Patriotic Front government has a clear chance to demonstrate that they can deliver a constitution to the Zambian people through a referendum unlike previous constitution making processes which never yielded tangible results.

He said ZCTU attaches great importance to the constitution making process and urged the technical committee to conclude its work by 30 June, this year in line with the initial stated time frame.

Government has rejected a fresh proposal by the technical committee drafting the Zambian constitution to have a six months extension to the constitution making process.

Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba has maintained that the committee should conclude its programme of work by June30, this year as earlier indicated.
