Chadiza villages receive ‘fresh’ water
Chadiza, June 10, 2013,ZANIS……Two traditional leaders of Chadiza in the eastern province have
commended the government for improving water supply and sanitation in their villages.
The two, village headwoman Rhoda Phiri also known as Gibson of Chief Mwangala’s area and
Headman Mike Phiri of Chamchenga in Zingalume chiefdom in Chadiza district have commended
government for drilling 30 boreholes in the area.
The bore holes have been provided through the Water Supply and Sanitation Project.
Mrs Phiri could not hold her tears of joy as she narrated how
villagers in her area used to fetch water from a shallow well where
livestock such as cattle, pigs and goats also drank water.
She said the increase in diarrhea cases prompted her to make a passionate appeal to the
local authority to consider sinking a bore hole in her chiefdom adding that she was happy that
government has fulfilled its campaign promises.

Tembo said government will drill 15 bore holes while Plan Zambia has
also given the district an extra 15 to be drilled across the
Mr. Tembo said that the local authority is following the government
policy where the community is supposed to contribute KR15 before being
given a bore hole in order to encourage community ownership.
He said in the past communities were not taking care of their water
points because of the attitude that government or the council owned
Mr. Tembo said the drilling of the bore holes was one way in which the
district was contributing towards the attainment of the Millennium
Development Goals-MDGs on water and sanitation.
