—Police in North-western Province have warned distributors and retailers of counterfeit products in the province to desist from the act or face the wrath of the law.

Police Provincial Deputy Commissioner, Paul Achiume, sounded the warning when the Police Intellectual Property Unit destroyed 141 counterfeit Samsung mobile phones which were confiscated from traders in Solwezi district yesterday.

Mr Achiume warned that perpetrators of intellectual property crimes should lay their hands off other people’s genuine products, saying the law will take its course on such culprits.

He said counterfeit products undermine the economy because traders evade paying tax, adding that government loses a lot of revenue which can be used to build infrastructure such as schools and hospitals among others.

Mr Achiume also observed that counterfeit products put genuine ones out of business as people think counterfeits are humanitarian.

Early this year, the Zambia Police Intellectual Property Unit conducted a very successful coordinated operation on counterfeit Samsung mobile phones and confiscated 141 replicas.

And pursuant to the provisions of Section 24 of the Merchandise Marks Act, Chapter 405 of the Laws of Zambia, the court ordered that the phones be burnt in fire.
