Petauke council workers protest

Petauke, June 4, 2013, ZANIS—Petauke district council workers have staged a seat in protest to demand payment of salary arrears for the past four months.

Both acting council chairman Makalamo Phiri and Council Secretary Pathias Sumba confirmed the development to ZANIS in separate interviews.

Operations at the council came to a standstill when irate workers locked up the council secretary`s office to pressurise for the release of funds.

Last week another category of division four employees at the council threatened to go on strike demanding payment of salary arrears.

Acting Council chairperson Makalamo Phiri called on the employees to go back to work as the council was doing everything possible to settle the arrears.

Meanwhile, employees interviewed said they were suffering because there had never been a time the council paid their salaries on time.

And a check by ZANIS found disorder at the council and it was not clear as to when the workers would resume work.
