TWO bandits have stolen a vehicle from a 26-year-old taxi driver of Chimwemwe in Kitwe, Copperbelt commissioner of police Mary Tembo confirmed yesterday.

And police have arrested a 22-year-old taxi driver of Kankoyo in Mufulira for allegedly abducting and defiling a 14-year-old girl.

In the robbery case, Ms Tembo said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened around 02:30 hours on Tuesday near Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS).

A Toyota Spacio registration number AOB 73 valued at KR28,000 was stolen by two men armed with a pistol after hiring the driver, Larry Hadia, from Nakadoli market to Chambishi, Ms Tembo said.

She said the incident happened when one of the suspects asked Mr Hadia to stop, pretending to answer the call of nature.

He then dropped from the vehicle, produced a pistol, pointed it at Mr Hadia and ordered him to get out of the vehicle. The bandits drove back to Kitwe, Ms Tembo said.

On the defilement case, Ms Tembo said the incident happened on Saturday between 10:00 hours and 12:00 hours in Zimba and the central business district in Mufulira.

She identified the suspect as Honest Bwalya of house number 246/B, Kankoyo in Mufulira.

Police officers apprehended Bwalya at Ronald Ross Hospital. He led the officers to Zimba compound where the girl was left in a thatched hut.

After interviewing the landlord, it was established that Bwalya had paid KR60 as rent for three months and bought a bag of mealie-meal, cooking oil and beddings, Ms Tembo said.

She said the girl also told police officers that Bwalya picked her up as she waited for transport into town where she was supposed to take KR100 to her aunt at Malela market.

The girl told police officers that on the material day when he picked her up, Bwalya dropped two passengers at the swimming pool and later drove to a place known as Magazine where he had sex with her, Ms Tembo said.

She said Bwalya drove to Zimba where he got the money the girl was supposed to take to her aunt and paid KR60 rent for the hut.

Ms Tembo said police have arrested Bwalya and charged him with defilement and abduction.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old girl of Kawama East in Mufulira died on the spot after being knocked down by a vehicle on Sunday.

The accident happened around 09:40 hours on the Kitwe-Mufulira road near the Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company plant in Mufulira.

She named the victim as Constance Kabamba while the driver of the vehicle has been identified as Dubrule Peter Harold, 55.
