ZESCO’s importance acknowledged

Siavonga, May 24, ZANIS ———Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda says ZESCO is a very important institution in the country.

Mr Chikwanda said that ZESCO was an important institution because it was a source of power that is used in many economic activities such as farming and industrial purposes among others.

“We cannot do without power. For example farming and industrial works need power that’s why we want ZESCO to work and expertise their works in order to reduce load shedding due to the high demand of power in the country,’’ he said.

Mr Chikwanda said this at ZESCO management offices in Siavonga today before touring Kariba North Bank Power Extension project.

He said that government will continue to support and provide ZESCO with funds in carrying out its operations because it was one of the organizations in the country that has performed well despite some problems the institution was facing.

The Finance Minister said that he was looking forward to see ZESCO start exporting electricity to other countries after the completion of power extensions at Kariba North Bank and Kafue gorge.

And speaking earlier, ZESCO Managing Director Cyprian Chitundu thanked government for its continuity of financial support it renders to the institution.

“As ZESCO we are very excited that for so many years we see much support by government to enable us do what we are supposed to do and I would like to mention to you honorable minister that by December this year, we will be commissioning the Kariba North Bank Power Extension, ‘’ he said.
