Northern BETUZ welcomes government move

Kasama, May 23, ZANIS ——The Basic Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) in Northern Province has welcomed government’s commitment to pay teachers their responsibility and double class allowances which it had withdrawn.

Provincial BETUZ Chairperson Obby Chisala said President Michael Sata’s administration has demonstrated that it is a listening government and puts the interests of its people first.

Mr Chisala told ZANIS in Kasama today that teachers in the province were happy with government’s decision to continue paying them their responsibility allowances.

He has since commended leaders from all teachers unions for engaging government in dialogue over its initial decision to withdraw responsibility and double class allowances from teachers in the country.

The Northern province BETUZ Chairperson said the spirit of working together between government and the labour movement should continue for national development to be achieved.

He further said teachers in Northern province are optimistic that government will fulfil its promise of improving their welfare.

Recently, government announced that it had withdrawn responsibility allowances from teachers in the country in order to facilitate the cleaning up of the system of ghost workers who were benefitting from the incentive.
