Judges have no say death penalty –  Acting chief justice, Lombe Chibesakunda

Siavonga, May 23rd, 2013 — Acting chief justice, Lombe Chibesakunda says it is not judges’ duty to decide whether it is right or wrong to include the death penalty in the current constitution making process.

Justice Chibesakunda has explained that this is because the role of the judiciary is to just adjudicate over the matter, which she said is lawful and constitutionally authorized.

ZANIS reports from Siavonga that the Acting Chief Justice was speaking when she officially opened the reflection seminar of the judicially on the mandatory death penalty at Lake Safari lodge in the District, yesterday.

She said for judges’ hands are tied as long as the constitution remains in its current form of recognizing the death penalty.

Justice Chibesakunda has since urged the judiciary at the ongoing reflection seminar to discuss the death penalty within the confines of the law.
