Government urged to formulate policies to govern church

Lusaka, May 9, ZANIS ——- The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) has called on government to come up with policies that will curb the mushrooming of churches that have no basis.

Organisation Board Chairperson, Beauty Phiri said government should look at how many clergymen have been found wanting in various crimes and find a lasting solution to it.

She told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that it is unfortunate to have clergymen pretending to be praying for people and yet they have other hidden motives.

Ms Phiri was commenting on two clergy men who were recently arrested for indecently assaulting two girls.

She further noted that it is important for government to be in control of churches that are coming up as not everyone who is trained as a pastor can run a church.

Ms Phiri also advised parents to be cautious with the churches their children go to.

On 7th May, 2013, police in Chipata arrested two clergymen from a named church for indecently assaulting two girls while praying for them.

The actual incident occurred on 25th April, 2013 in the hills of Nabvutika compound where the suspects were conducting prayers.
