Vandalism takes root in Choma settlement area

Choma, May 3, ZANIS ——Settlers at Harmony Settlement area in Choma district have started vandalizing government property belonging to Livestock Development Trust (LDT) Farm.

The settlers also have among others things turned the LDT farm into a hub of criminal activities thereby posing a danger to human life and livestock at the farm.

This came to light when briefing Choma District Commissioner Golden Nyambe and other government officials who visited the area.

Briefing the District Commissioner, Scheme Chairman Edward Mudenda said settlers have started conducting illegal activities which are now a threat to neighbouring farms.

Mr Mudenda said that as a result of this, the scheme committee has run into serious difficulties with neighbouring white commercial farmers.

He described the situation as unfortunate as some white commercial farmers who had offered the settlers grazing land for livestock are threatening to withdraw this gesture.

He disclosed that a lot of LDT farm property has either been vandalized or stolen thereby frustrating efforts of making peace the scheme has been hoping to have with all the surrounding farms.

And District Commissioner Nyambe warned settlers to desist from involving themselves in criminal activities or face the wrath of the law.

Mr Nyambe said the reason why government allocated the land to the people is to enable them develop and better their lives through agriculture and not to engage into criminal activities.

The District Commissioner called on the police in the district to move in and ensure culprits are brought to book.
