Government has paid tribute to all the workers for their immense contributions and sacrifices they have been making towards transforming the country into a better place.

Youth and Sport Minister Chishimba Kambwili said government will always respect workers and consider concerns of their trade unions.

Mr. Kambwili said in a speech read for him by his Deputy Minister, Steven Masumba during Labour Day celebrations in Mongu today that government will remain committed to comprehensive reforms of the labour laws in order to bring them in line with the labour market dynamics.

He stated that government would continue with structural reforms in order to make the public sector more efficient in service delivery.

Meanwhile, the labour movement in Western Province has congratulated the Patriotic Front (PF) government for giving unions the first ever nice platform of negotiating for salary increment and better conditions of service in this year’s collective bargaining process.

Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) chairperson for Mongu Chapter Trust Chingala said the labour movement was happy that workers will get a living wage in accordance to the provisions of the public service pay policy.

Mr. Chingala has however appealed to government to consider enshrining the rights of workers in Zambia in the bill of rights of the new constitution.

This year’s labour day was celebrated under the theme, ‘Transforming the economy through job creation, labour law reforms, better conditions of service and improved work culture’’.
